Android Auto Is Getting Widgets, Video Apps and a New Look for Music Services

Google used its I/O 2026 event to preview a major update for Android Auto, with a redesigned interface, support for widgets, improved layouts for music apps and broader adaptation to different in-car display shapes.

One of the biggest changes is visual. The next version of Android Auto will adopt Google’s Material 3 Expressive design language, bringing smoother animations and a more personalized interface. The system will be able to carry over fonts and wallpapers from a connected Galaxy phone to the car’s infotainment screen.

Google is also changing how Android Auto uses space inside the vehicle. The app row will appear as a floating bar on either the left or right side of the display, depending on the steering wheel position. The full interface, including the app drawer, notifications, apps and widgets, will sit above Google Maps rather than feeling like a separate screen. In supported cars, the system may also show air-conditioning controls directly inside the interface.

Widgets are another major addition. Users will be able to place compatible phone widgets on the infotainment display for quicker access to common controls and information. During the presentation, Google showed examples including Clock, Contacts, Google Home, Photos and Weather.

Android Auto will also gain access to Gemini features on phones that support Gemini Intelligence, although availability will depend on device compatibility and hardware.

The update brings a larger shift for parked vehicles as well. Android Auto is adding support for video apps, allowing drivers to watch content through YouTube and other streaming services while the car is in parking mode. Compatible apps will support playback at up to Full HD resolution and 60 frames per second. If the driver starts moving while a video is playing, the video will stop showing on screen, but its audio will continue.

The video feature will arrive first in supported vehicles from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata and Volvo.

Music apps are also getting a substantial redesign. Instead of placing tabs along the side, Android Auto will move them to the top of the screen. Google is giving developers more layout templates, more grid variations and greater visual flexibility so music services can present content with richer artwork and stronger hierarchy.

A new adaptive mini player will let users keep browsing music while playback controls remain visible. The refreshed music experience is expected to appear across several services, including Amazon Music, Gaana, PocketFM, Spotify, TuneIn and YouTube Music.

Android Auto will also add Dolby Atmos support in compatible cars. The feature will first be available on supported models from BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata and Volvo.

The new Android Auto features will come to Galaxy phones, but not every function will be available on every device or vehicle. Support will depend on the phone, the car’s hardware and the compatibility of individual apps.
