In 2011, I made a joke concept for a refrigerator.
It was called iCool Fridge if you imagined a fridge running on iOS. Or Cool Widgets Fridge if you preferred the more open Android version.
The idea was almost stupidly simple: replace fridge magnets with widgets.

One door could have a coffee machine or an ice maker. The other door was a huge touchscreen, almost the full height of the fridge. Not a tiny service display showing the freezer temperature, but a proper surface where a home interface could live.
You could leave a note there. Check what was inside without opening the door. Make a shopping list. Play music or video. Find a recipe. Check the weather in the morning over a cup of coffee. Look at stock prices. Lock the fridge at certain hours if you were on a diet. Or block access for small children.
And instead, give the kids the lower part of the screen, where they could draw with their fingers.
If you had a cat, you could install a mouse widget. Let the cat use the future too.

And of course, you could buy virtual fridge magnets from the cities you had visited. Because a fridge without magnets is not really a fridge. It is some kind of medical cabinet.
The concept was a joke. But it was not a joke about “let’s put an iPad into a fridge.” What interested me was something else: what everyday habit can be replaced by digital behavior in a way people understand immediately?
Magnets, sticky notes, children’s drawings, shopping lists, paper recipes, a postcard from Rome, a reminder to “buy milk” — all of this already lived on the refrigerator. I was not inventing a new scenario. I was looking at the fridge door as an interface that had existed for decades, just without glass, pixels, and software.
That is why the idea was so easy to understand.
In April 2011, I published the concept on Behance. The description had an almost naive line: A regular refrigerator should have a touchscreen the size of its door.
Back then, it sounded like a design provocation. Today, it does not sound strange at all. Then the concept was unexpectedly picked up by the media.
Gizmonews.ru described the fridge as a modern alternative to the family “wall” of magnets, stickers, and notes.
The idea of the concept is simple: the refrigerator door can be covered with a full-size touchscreen controlled by a small mobile-class computer.
Trend Hunter wrote that iCool brought to the refrigerator the things usually held there by magnets, only now through widgets, Android, or Apple apps.
Tom’s Guide France paid attention to the scenarios with user recognition, dieting, fridge locking, recipes, and online video.
Shoebox Dwelling described the idea as an attempt to replace “fridge clutter” with a functional touchscreen display.
Later, the concept started to have a strange little life of its own. UX specialists discussed it. An image of the concept appeared in the book There’s Not an App for That: Mobile User Experience Design for Life by Simon Robinson, Gary Marsden, and Matt Jones. Some time later, I also found iCool in third-party presentations about the smart refrigerator market, not as a joke anymore, but as a visual argument that smart kitchens had a user scenario people could understand.

There was also a publication in the Chinese magazine Rayli Fashion Pioneer, probably in April 2011. I still have not found that issue in any public archive. If someone happens to have it somewhere, I would be very grateful.
But the most interesting part of this story is not that the concept moved around blogs and media.
The interesting part is that almost everyone discussed not the screen itself, but the scenarios around it.
That matters.
People rarely want to pay for technology by itself. A large screen is not value by itself. A touchscreen is not value by itself. A camera inside the fridge is not value by itself. Widgets are not value by themselves either.
Value appears when technology enters an existing habit and makes it easier, funnier, more understandable, or more useful.
I can check the fridge without opening the door for no reason.
My shopping list is always in the kitchen.
I am standing in the store and can see whether there is milk at home.

My child cannot open the fridge at night, but can still draw on it with a finger.
The kitchen is no longer a place where all information hangs on pieces of paper.
This is where technology starts to become a product.
In that sense, invention rarely looks like one huge genius leap. More often, it is a chain of smaller shifts. Screens become cheaper. Touch interfaces become familiar. Digitizers become more accurate. Mobile operating systems become mainstream. UX becomes more mature. People begin to expect behavior from the objects around them, not just function.
First, we get used to touching the screen of a phone.
Then a tablet. Then an ATM, a ticket machine, a car dashboard, a coffee machine.
And then someone looks at a refrigerator and thinks: wait, why is the most visible surface in the kitchen still only a place for magnets?
A few years later, the market did arrive at similar ideas.
Samsung Family Hub got a large touchscreen, internal cameras, notes, photos, shopping lists, recipes, music, and kitchen management scenarios. LG showed the Smart InstaView Refrigerator with a large touch display, webOS, Wi-Fi features, and the ability to look inside without opening the door.

And the important thing is not who first put a screen on a fridge. The more important thing is that the market arrived at the same user logic: a refrigerator is not only about storing food. It is the central domestic surface of the kitchen.
The funniest confirmation of this was the #FreeDorothy story.
In 2019, a girl named Dorothy went viral after she allegedly posted on Twitter from her family’s LG Smart Refrigerator. According to the story, her mother had taken away her phone and other devices, and Dorothy found one last way to get online: through the fridge. The tweet, marked as coming from an “LG Smart Refrigerator,” spread quickly. People started posting #FreeDorothy, and both Twitter and LG reacted to the moment.

Later, doubts appeared about whether the tweet had really been sent from a refrigerator. The source label could be faked, and the story started to look a little like an internet myth.
But for UX, it is still a beautiful story.
Because the possibility itself felt believable to people. Nobody said, “What nonsense, a fridge cannot be a communication device.” Everyone understood the mechanics immediately: take away the phone, and I will tweet from the fridge.
At that moment, home appliances stopped being just appliances.
The refrigerator became a screen, a family board, a window into itself, a media device, a shopping point, a kitchen interface, and sometimes even the last communication channel to the outside world.
My 2011 concept was a joke. It had virtual magnets, a coffee machine in the door, a mouse widget for the cat, and an almost advertising-like line:
Everyone loves an iCool fridge. Everyone buys an iCool fridge.
But behind that joke was a thought I could not yet formulate so clearly at the time: people do not pay for the presence of technology. They pay for new behavior that feels natural.
When technology is simply added to an object, it often feels unnecessary.
When it lands in a familiar place, a familiar gesture, and a familiar everyday pain, it starts to feel like the object has evolved.
A fridge with a screen was a funny idea as long as we thought of it as a fridge with a screen.
It became understandable when we started thinking of it as a family surface that used to be analog and could now become interactive.
I think this is what changed the approach to user experience in home appliances.
We started designing not only the function of the appliance, but also its role in human life.

Not just cooling food.
But taking part in the kitchen as a living system of habits, decisions, conversations, lists, children, cats, diets, coffee, and those random moments when we open the fridge for no reason at all.
